Reduce Pain or Increase Pleasure

It’s the only reason why anyone does anything, including when buying stuff whether products or services or knowledge.

It’s because of this inherent human trait that business comes into existence. And why there are zillions of sales people out there selling stuff that can either reduce your pain or increase your pleasure.Pain or pleasure comes in many forms. In this current economic situation, pain could be lack of job security, financial uncertainty, the long hours at work with little pay. Pleasure could be that side income coming in, more time in your hands.

So, when you buy “something”, that something should do one of those two; reduce pain or increase pleasure. Which ultimately makes you feel good about your purchase.

What you don’t want to feel is to feel that you’ve been duped!

When you’re in business, you’re selling something. So, if you don’t like being duped as a buyer, you definitely do not want to dupe your buyers.

The GOLDEN RULE : Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.

Great! I get it. But what if what I’m selling is the same as what gazillion others are selling too?

I hear this a lot. Heck, I’ve thought about it too, many times.

Let’s look at it logically. If there’s a lot of people selling it, it’s because there’s a lot of people who want it.

A lot of people like Coke. But you still have Pepsi or Sarsi or A&W Root Beer and countless other sweetened, brown-colored drink. So many options to reduce pain (i.e. thirst) or increase pleasure (sugar high).

And those non-Coke brands still survive coz’ people want them. So, it’s not the right question to ask when you have a product/service to sell that is similar to others. A product/service that you know can help reduce pain or increase pleasure.

The correct question would be, “How do I get people to consider my product even though there are many other similar products out there?”

So, instead of a product question, it should be a marketing question. The ways to promote are many (see my previous post) if you’re just starting out. If you’ve got a big marketing budget, then you can try out the big guns like TV commercials or radio spots or billboards.

That’s what being in business is about for me. I have a product/service that can help reduce a particular pain or increase a particular pleasure and that I have to sell it to people who are already in the market of it.

I’m exploring ways on how to do that.
